Chinese Maternal Support Program (Victoria)

This program is a community-based initiative developed by The Particle Studio Ltd (TPS) to support Chinese-speaking pregnant and postpartum mothers in Victoria.

It is designed to function as a culturally responsive entry point to the Australian maternal and family support system, helping participants better understand, access, and navigate existing services available to them.

While Australia has a well-established maternal and child health system, many mothers from Chinese-speaking backgrounds continue to face barriers in accessing these services, including language challenges, cultural differences, and unfamiliarity with available support pathways. These barriers can lead to delayed help-seeking, increased stress, and a sense of isolation during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

This program adopts a practical and accessible approach by providing clear information, service navigation, and connection to relevant support services, including maternal and child health services (MCH), general practitioners (GPs), community organisations, and specialised support providers.

As the program develops, it also aims to introduce additional support components such as educational sessions, community-based activities, and access to professionals including midwives, lactation consultants, and mental health practitioners.

The overall goal is to reduce access barriers, strengthen community connection, and support Chinese-speaking mothers in confidently engaging with the broader health and support system in Victoria.

Why This Program Matters
for CALD Communities

Culturally Responsive & CALD-Focused Support

This program is specifically designed for Chinese-speaking mothers, addressing the language and cultural barriers commonly experienced by culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. It aims to improve access to local maternal and mental health services.

Early Emotional Support & Mental Health Prevention

Through low-intensity and ongoing communication, the program provides early emotional support during pregnancy and the postpartum period. This approach helps reduce psychological stress and supports the prevention of postnatal depression and anxiety.

Reducing Social Isolation & Strengthening Community Connection

Through regular communication and community-based activities, the program supports mothers in building social connections, reducing social isolation, and enhancing their sense of belonging and overall community wellbeing.
