About the Program

This is a planned weekly community playgroup for autism families, particularly those from Chinese-speaking backgrounds.

The program is currently in development and preparation, with sessions planned to be held at a council pavilion in Box Hill. The initiative is designed to support Chinese-speaking autism families across Melbourne's Eastern Region, offering both indoor and outdoor space for flexible participation.

Children will not be required to engage in structured activities, and families will be free to participate at their own pace. Simply being present in a shared, safe environment can already be a meaningful step for many children and families.

This program is not a clinical or therapy service.

Why This Matters

Many Chinese-speaking autism families face very real, everyday challenges.

Some children find it difficult to cope with external environments — such as crowded places, loud noise, or fast-paced settings — which can easily lead to stress or emotional overwhelm. As a result, parents often feel hesitant to take their children to regular community activities or public spaces.

In school settings, some children also struggle to fit into group environments. Over time, both children and parents may gradually reduce their outings, and their world can become increasingly limited to the home.

For parents, this can be an extremely isolating experience. Many do not have people they can talk to, and are unsure where to find support or information that is relevant to their child’s needs.

In reality, many families are simply hoping for a relaxed and safe space — where children can slowly become more comfortable with the outside world, and where parents can connect with others who share similar experiences, and support one another.

We hope to provide such a space, helping families gradually reconnect with the community.

Our Story

This initiative is shaped by lived experience and ongoing observation within the community.

We have seen that some children with higher support needs may find it difficult to access or remain in mainstream school environments. In some cases, specialist school places are limited, and families may spend extended periods at home without consistent external support.

For these families, daily life can become physically and emotionally demanding, especially when children are sensitive to noise, crowds, or unfamiliar environments, making it difficult to access public spaces.

At the same time, we have also observed that many autistic children, including those who are more independent, do have a desire for social connection — but often in their own way, and within environments where they feel understood and comfortable.

These experiences have shaped our understanding that what many families need is not a highly structured program, but a flexible, low-pressure space where both children and parents can engage at their own pace.

We believe that even small, consistent opportunities for connection can make a meaningful difference.
